Blackground Records Aaliyah & R.Kelly

The unethical behavior I came across is over a century old, but very memorable for me to remember.  My unethical behavior was about the late singer Aaliyah who passed back in Aug of 2001, and R.Kelly. I use to bang their music back in the day. They got some nice hits! The organization it had to deal with was Blackground Records. Aaliyah at the time was new to the game. (15 years old) Her uncle Barry Hankerson was her manager. He was also 27-year old R.Kellys manager , and had wanted him to travel to Detroit to hear Aaliyah sing. The two linked up made great music but eventually mixed business with pleasure, and that’s when the rumors began to surface the air that Aaliyah and R. Kelly had gotten married. Now R.Kelly could be facing statutory rape. The Duo

Looking back on this, I see so many ways the company could have gone about the situation differently.  For the first decision, as an uncle I would’ve made some type of parental guidance or mentoring to be with Aaliyah, instead of throwing her off onto a 27-year old.  The company could have at least waited for her to be more mature in age until they signed her.  When the rumors started to circulate on the media, the company should have cut all collaborations (songs, videos, and hanging out, talk shows) off. They also should have told the two not to speak on the topic, when asked. Luckily someone had enough sense to recognize Aaliyah wasn’t ready for that much to be occurring in her life and the two was split up and sent on about their way, as if nothing ever happened. The Media & R,Kelly & Aaliyah

On Aaliyahs’ part I don’t think it affected her or her career. People still question the situation today, but Aaliyah grew up and blossomed into a woman. She overcame that and was seen to be and still is one of the best female artists of all time.  For R.Kelly I believe this was just the beginning of his pedophile attempts. Later down the road in 2008 he found himself in another situation like before. So, I would say his is long term. Do you know how many R.Kelly pedophile jokes there’re?!?! He still makes music and is still in the industry but he’s done. Blackground Records are still around today. They feel off a little, I think. But in the long run I think they end up letting R.Kelly go due to the future pedophile charges.

Interview with PR Professional

On September 29, 2013, I interviewed Tabnie L. Dozier of  Eyewitness News Local WEHT WTVW, where she is a Reporter/Anchor. Tabnie is a alumni of Western Kentucky University where she studied Broadcasting and graduated with honors back in May of 2011! #HillToppers She relocated to Evansville, In where her family is located and found work. Tabnie and I are actually cousins, and we conducted this interview over the phone.

A day in her shoes sounds exhausting , I couldn’t imagine a week!!A typical week for Tabnie is BUSY BUSY BUSY…. and did I mention BUSY! Everyday she has to get up at 4 a.m. and usually gets off at 12:30 p.m.- 2. Her days consist of Anchoring and Reporting news on the morning daybreak show, and also reports breaking news and traffic updates. You thought that was it?!?!? After leaving work, she may have to report to a City Council meeting, or she might just get lucky and catch a break for a new story. Pretty much she’s always working, and never has a  9-5 job schedule.

One piece of work that Tabnie is proud of is a story she covered over the summer. It was about a police officer who had basically saved a little girls life, after she was hit by a car. She mentioned, “It was like turning a negative into a positive, very sad story but with such an amazing outcome.”

She stays updated in the PR world by people she says, “People are some of the best sources.” -Dozier

She gives out her business cards and always have them on her. Its a good and simple way to get yourself out there.

Some tips she offered me for someone starting fresh in the PR field was to be flexible, having and staying confident, and to understand writing. Being flexible is a must, you never know what you might have to do. Having confidence and keeping it is important. people are relying on you to help them out or may seek info from you, so ITS IMPORTANT THAT YOU KNOW YOUR FACTS & TO NEVER GIVE OUT FALSE OR UNSURE INFORMATION.

With writing she said ” It’s the most important, and people take it for granted.” She  wished she had more time with writing back at WKU. She didn’t a lot of time with it. She then went on talking bout how writing the wrong facts can get you in trouble or mislead an audience, so its really important to make  sure you know what your writing and to improve on it.

As of right now I am still looking forward in the field of PR. I  pretty much still have the same mindset as I did before the interview. I would say that I wouldn’t want to be a Reporter/Anchor for a news show though. It’s just not the type of work I wanna do.
